DuPont, an absolute gorgeous French neoclassical mansion that is meant to resemble a French chateau. In addition to viewing the Colonnade, my wife and I explore the estate’s vast collection of magestic gardens ranging from the “Sunken Gardens” the “Maze Garden” and the “Boxwood Gardens.” We also captured great pictures of the “Temple Of Love” the “Reflecting Pool” & the gold plated “Statue Of Achievement.” Each of these attractions are a mesmerizing sight to behold and fit perfectly with the surrounding gardens.Īfter visiting the gardens and statues, my wife and I visited and toured the home of Alfred I. Upon visiting Nemours, both my wife and I were immediately awestruck by the sheer immense size of the estate and captivated by the numerous collection of French style gardens.ĭuring our visit, my wife and I first viewed and took great pictures of the “Colonnade” a memorial designed by notable architect, Thomas Hastings, and which pays tribute to the DuPont patriarchs, Pierre Samuel du Pont de Nemours and his son Eleuthère Irénée du Pont. In May of 2021, I brought and treated my wife and myself for a visit and self guided tour of the Nemours Estate. The Nemours Estate is undisputedly the crown jewel attraction of Wilmington, Delaware and one of the world’s most beautiful locations to visit and sightsee. I have to give a special shout out to Terry who’s a real hoot, Paula who really spilled the tea on the weddings and wives, and the docent in the garage whose name I didn’t get but who has driven all 6 cars including the $900k Rolls Royce (he remembers Jessie DuPont riding around Wilmington in one of them:) What a wonderful way to spend the afternoon! There’s so much to see and enjoy but the most important part of the whole experience are the docents stationed in every area, waiting to dazzle you with interesting facts and answers to all your questions! They add such depth to the history and make the DuPont family come alive (his third wife Jessie seems like such a character). The mansion is mind blowing in its splendor and detail- DuPont was an engineer so every mechanical idea that was cutting edge is in this house- bowling alley, dark room, ice maker, boiler room, central vacuum system (whaaaa?!). We started first at the Sunken Gardens and then worked our way up to the mansion, marveling at the chubby angelic cherubs and fantastical beasts of the fountains. Before you even go inside, the grounds and gardens will leave you stunned ( the Chinese peonies smelled like heaven).
